Type of Aircraft Employed: Initially, SNJ-4, SB2A-2/4 (Brewster Buccaneers reclaimed from the Dutch Air Force when Java fell), PV-1 (Ventura), SBD-5, F4U-1, F6F-3 (Hellcat), F7F-3N, SBD-6, F7F-2N (Tigercat), J2F-6, and SNB-2.

Later, they transitioned to the F-4 Phantom II and eventually F/A-18 Hornets.

Achievements: During World War II, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 531 played a pioneering role in developing tactics for night fighter planes in the Southwest Pacific. From September 1943 to February 1944, their innovative efforts in this new domain of aerial warfare earned the squadron accolades, including both a Distinguished Flying Cross and a Legion of Merit. Between September 14 and October 27, they flew 47 night combat missions, which included eight scrambles and attempts to engage 17 enemy aircraft, showcasing their dedication and adaptability in the face of emerging combat tactics.
