Unit: VMSB/VMTB-454

Commissioned: March 1, 1944

Decommissioned: January 28, 1946

Nickname: Helldivers

Date of Insignia: 1944

Aircraft: Curtiss SB2C-1A Helldiver, Grumman TBM-3E Avenger

Remarks: The insignia's blue background represents the limitless sky; the gold triangle and crimson cloak reflect the colors of the United States Marine Corps; the bomb signifies the primary mission; and the Helldiver's expression embodies the resolution to press the attack fearlessly. (Excerpt from squadron history).

Achievements: VMSB/VMTB-454 was the first to conduct a combat test of airborne forward-firing rockets in an attack against Japanese forces in Keravia Bay, Rabaul, New Britain, on February 17, 1944. However, it's noted that the squadron did not see combat during their deployment on the USS Puget Sound in July 1945, as the war ended before they could be engaged in combat missions.
